【Week 9: Light & Shadow】

Chiaroscuro exercise
First, start by tracing the image with pen tool and differentiate the shadow with knife tool or pen tool. I chose to go with pen tool because I think the knife tool's cut line is too smooth, missing the details, Then click File/Place to place the watercolour texture image. Through this method, we can change the watercolour texture colour on the colour palate. 



For this pear image, use knife tool to cut it into small pieces. And also turn the skull image into an illustration shape with the trace image tool in Adobe Illustrator, then clip mask to the pear to create texture. 





Instruction:

Choose a story from the linked website. Break down the narrative of the chosen story into 3-act structures of Introduction - Climax - Epilogue. Then create 3 panels digital triptych illustrating each of the act. 

Consider the interesting twists in the plots of each act, and include these into the design.

Or you can highlight the notable icons or symbolisms that occur in these acts.

Think of creating a premise preview for the story to make readers intrigued.

The challenges are:

  1. Only one story from this website: https://poestories.com/stories.php
  2. No, you cannot use other story than the ones from the website
  3. Visuals are displayed in a series of three
  4. Include short non-spoiler text for each act

I chose "The Tell-Tale Heart" story for my digital triptych project.

Short Narrative Exercise:
Main Characters:
Narrator:
  • Driven by a strange fixation
  • Plans and carries out the murder of the old man
  • Overwhelmed by guilt and fear
  • Confesses to the police officers
  • Reveals his own madness
Old Man:
  • Elderly man
  • Has a strange blue eye
  • Becomes the focus of the narrator's obsession
  • Triggers the narrator's descent into madness
Police Officers:
  • Called to the narrator's house due to a disturbance
  • Unaware of the narrator's guilt
  • Conduct a search
  • Increase the narrator's anxiety
  • Prompt the narrator to confess
  • Discover the hidden body
