Assessment 2: Design Fabrication Outcome

Task description

In this authentic assessment you will develop experience with various fabrication techniques to realise convincing design outcomes. In a small team, you will develop design ideas in response to an allocated design brief. You will pitch your ideas to your peer cohort for collaborative informal feedback to determine which idea/s will be further developed. Your team will then work hands-on to realise the idea/s for exhibition at the end of semester. Individually you will create a design workbook that communicates and evaluates your design fabrication process and provides specifications and procedures for the fabrication of your design.

For this assessment, it is important to be pragmatic about capabilities relative to time commitments, resources and skill. Evaluating iterative prototype ideas, resolving problems, and reflecting critically on the design process assists decision making and ensures that optimal solutions are carried forward. Effective communication of final design specifications and fabrication processes is essential for designs to be accurately reproduced by manufacturers and makers. Collectively, these are essential design skills needed to effectively form, refine and realise ideas.
