4. Rationale

My artwork portrays a powerful message advocating for the transition from unclean to clean energy sources, aligning with UNSDG Goal 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy. The girl, holding a wind turbine as a weapon against pollution, symbolizes the proactive role individuals can play in protecting the environment. The background of nuclear towers and oil factories emitting purple-red smoke represents the detrimental effects of unclean energy on the planet. By contrast, the green ground beneath the girl signifies the promise of clean energy, while the blackened ground behind the factories illustrates the environmental degradation caused by fossil fuels and nuclear energy. This artwork serves as a striking visual call to action, urging viewers to embrace clean energy solutions to safeguard our planet's future.

Feedback:

Week 6:
After consultation with Dr Charles, he likes both ideas, but he recommends going on with idea 2, which I also like this idea more, so I went on with idea 2

Week 7:
I showed Dr Charles the 3 sketches, and he liked three of them. He liked sketch 2 the most, he said he liked the composition of it, it is more impactful and interesting.

Although I like sketch 2 too, but I think it can’t convey the message well (clean energy), so I chose sketch 1 to continue because its message is clearer compared to the others.

Dr Charles suggested I design the character, maybe can design her weapon, and use wind turbine as element to design the character. After some consideration, I believe that designing characters too intricately could blur the message I intend to convey. For instance, making the weapon design more complex might obscure its representation as a clean energy source like a wind turbine, making it less recognizable to viewers at first glance. Therefore, I disagree with Dr. Charles's opinion and advocate for maintaining a simple design for the wind turbine.

Reflection:
Creating this artwork was a fun experience, showcasing the potential of visual storytelling to advocate for change. I learn how to convey the message - shift from unclean energy to clean energy sources. Through this experience, I improved my visual art communication ability.
