Project 1 - Sound Dubbing and Shaping

Project 1A - Audio Dubbing
To do:

The Video that we need to sync audios in:
  1. Watch the video
  2. List down each scene on a spreadsheet and the sound effects that needed
  3. Record dialogue with a phone, and search sound effects online.
  4. Place audio files on the timeline, and sync them with video.
  5. Notes:
    • Audio track:
      • 4 tracks for dialogue, one character one track
      • 3 tracks for sound effects
      • 3 tracks for ambience sound
Note:
Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid:
Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones

Process
I analyzed the Sound Effects and ambient sounds required for each scene in the video, as well as the dialogues for the four characters.

Sound analysis spreadsheet

Then, I find sound effects and ambience sound on freesound and 99sounds website. And also recorded my voice for the dialogue.

The media I found
I started by taking the dialogues I recorded and applied noise reduction in Adobe Audition.
Can find this noise reduction panel on Favourite > Denoise

I began by aligning the outdoor and indoor ambiences.

Then came the lengthy editing process, start to add hard sound effects, where I had to meticulously add any sounds that should be present in the video. The footsteps needed to sync perfectly, and I had to pay close attention to the type of floor the footsteps were on to find the appropriate sound.

Then I proceeded to adjust my recordings based on the characters' identities. For the little girl's voice, I used the Pitch Shifter to raise the pitch. For the dad and the other two male characters, I lowered their pitches.

I also added stereo expander effect to some audio that there are sound directions. For example, the phone sound comes from the left, so adjust the center channel pan to the left.

The foot steps from left to right, so add stereo key frame from left to right too.

Project 1B - Sound Shaping:

To do:
Record your own voice for 5 seconds
Shape the audio into the following effect:
  1. Voice of phone call.
  2. Voice coming from inside of closet.
  3. Voice of toilet/bathroom.
  4. Underground cave.
  5. Alien/ Orc voice

1. Voice of phone call.
  • I searched for the "From the Phone" preset in Adobe Audition.
  • Add a slight reverb:
    • Use a small room reverb with a decay time of around 200-300ms and low wet mix (around 10-20%) to mimic the ambiance of a phone call.

2. Voice coming from inside of closet.
  • Apply a "Muffled" effect:
    • BASS remain, TREBLE to the bottom, raise MID RANGE to top.
muffled sound effect
  • Add a subtle room reverb:
    • Use a small room reverb with a decay time of 300ms and a low wet mix (around 10-20%).

3. Voice of toilet/bathroom

  • Apply a reverb effect:
    • In the Effects menu, go to Reverb > Studio Reverb.
    • Set the Room Size to a small value (simulating a small space like a bathroom or toilet).
    • Adjust the Reverb Time (Decay Time) to a short duration to mimic the reflective sound.
    • Experiment with the Wet Mix to control the amount of reverb applied.
    • (I learned this from chatgpt)
  • Parametric Equalizer:
    • Boost the midrange frequencies (around 800-1500 Hz) to simulate the bathroom's resonance.

4. Underground cave
  • Add Convolution Reverb
    • Effect>Reverb>Convolution Reverb
    • Impulse: Medium Size Cave
    • (learn form Youtube)
  • Parametric Equalizer:
    • emphasize the lower frequencies to make the voice sound more resonant
  • Apply a delay effect to create a sense of space and distance.

5. Alien voice
  • Use pitch-shifting effects:
    • Raising it for a cute alien-like voice
  • Apply a modulation effect:
    • Use flanger or chorus effects to create a unique, otherworldly texture.
  • Add reverb or echo:
    • Use a large reverb or echo with a long decay time to give the voice a sense of space and alien qualities.
