Feedback:

Week 3:
Thought of my research topic (Effects of Visual Styles on Player Engagement in Video Games), showed it to the lecturer, and it got approved. He suggested doing more reading on this topic.

Week 6:
I showed my research problem to the lecturer, and he felt that my sentence structure was a bit odd. He helped me rephrase it.

Week 9:
The lecturer reviewed my problem statement and research question and found no issues. However, when discussing how to collect data, he raised a concern about using a survey form. Participants might answer based on their own gaming experience, and if some haven't encountered the specific game types I mentioned, they might struggle to respond. The lecturer suggested conducting a gameplay session where participants could try the games before filling out a survey or participating in an interview.

Week 12:
I decided to use the user experience method to collect data. I wrote a detailed report and had the teacher check it. During this process, I encountered an issue as the game I wanted to use was too expensive. The lecturer suggested that I could book the vortex lab for my gameplay session, mentioning that he had games I could borrow.

Reflection:

I found this assignment particularly challenging for me because I generally dislike writing and struggle with expressing my thoughts in words. I had to push myself to write. However, despite the difficulty, I did enjoy the process, especially researching a topic I'm interested in. Conducting gameplay sessions was a unique experience for me, marking my first time observing others play games and analyzing their micro-expressions, attitudes, and mental states. It was fascinating to see the varying speeds at which people grasp games – some quickly understand and respond to challenging aspects, while others need more time to comprehend game rules and controls, impacting their overall gaming experience. Additionally, I discovered that players, when deeply immersed in a game, often find it challenging to articulate why they are so engaged. I had to rely on observing their reactions to make judgments. Overall, this assignment taught me a lot, especially in terms of how to conduct research effectively.
