LECTURES
Week 1
Mr Martin gave us a briefing for our module.
Week 2
The lecturer discussed different shot sizes, camera angles, dynamic screen direction, and the 180° degree rule screen direction.
Week 3
Story & Plot:
Story = What happened?
Plot = Why they happen? And how?
3-ACT Structure
Beginning:
Setup/introduction of a story
Middle:
Confrontation of a problem
End:
Resolution of problems
Week 4
Mise En Scène
It refers to what we see onscreen; its visuals; meaning, all of the elements that appear on camera and their arrangement.
Everything in the frame can carry meaning.
Include:
- Composition
- Set Design
- Lighting
- Costume and Props
- Depth of Space
Week 6
Colour Correction
The process where every individual clip of a video footage is altered to match color temperature of multiple shots to a consistent technical standard of appearance.
Week 7
Sound Shaping with EQ
We learned how to shape a normal voice into different effects using the parametric equalizer, and reverb in Adobe Audition.

Shooting Exercise: Framing
We are divided into groups of two for the framing exercise. We are to film our partners in different shots listed by Mr Martin as a shooting exercise.
The eight shots are as follows:
- Low-angle wide shot
- Frontal MCU (soft background)
- Frontal MS (soft background)
- Extreme close-up shot
- Side angle MS (soft background)
- 3/4 angling MCU shot (with blurry/soft background)
- CU shot
-Eye-level medium wide shot
FINAL VIDEO
Premiere Pro Editing Exercise 1 “Lalin”
We were tasked to edit a video with provided footage filmed by our seniors that is not finely edited according to the story of the original video Lalin, following the tutorial video by Mr Martin. The duration of the final edited video should be 35 seconds sharp.
Edited "Lalin" Video
Notes:
- Use the Editing workspace
- Trim footage: Mark in (I), Mark out (O)
- To make the character disappears (Scene 1 shot 6A & 6B): Shorten shot 6B → overwrite shot 6A → apply the Cross Dissolve effect
Week 3
3-act structure exercise
After watching the short film, we should differentiate between Act 1, Act 2, and Act 3, as well as Plot 1 and Plot 2, and then write down in the template provided by Mr Martin.

Findings
I found that the footage uses many different kinds of shooting angles and shot
sizes to express the content, through this method, audiences will be more
focused on what they want to tell.
Haiya the first exercise "mints" advertisement editing practice is too easy
peasy lah. The sequence of footage is already arranged properly, just import
all and export to mp4 only, no need to use brain. But when comes to the second
editing exercise which is "Doritos" advertisement, the original sequence is
very very confusing, but it is very fun, feel like rearranging words into a
sentence when I was in kindergarten, but is video clip version. The
advertisement is interesting, the scream when the baby flies out is very funny
hahahaha, and when editing it, need to listen so many times the ahhhhh XD.
8 Shot shooting exercise:
This assignment was a lot of fun, and I decided to put what I learned into practice right after the class while the concepts were fresh in my mind. It enhanced my understanding of framing. Although I was a bit hesitant at first to shoot in public because there were so many people passing by, I eventually went for it. I also tried to incorporate some actions between shots with different framings, like pushing up my glasses at the end of one shot and starting the next shot with the same action. When these shots were edited together, it created a smoother transition without abrupt scene cuts.
The Lalin editing most challenging part is how to cut into 35 seconds. The original footage is a bit long when just cut away the "action" in the beginning and end, so need to give up some scenes to fit in.
Using a 3-act structure in a short film makes the video interesting, it can clearly establish the background and captivate the audience to keep them engaged. But sometimes the plot hard to find, and people have varying perspectives on films, and their interpretations of the plot may differ. Hence, there is no standard answer for the 3-act structure.
